Meet Dr. Erum Qayum

Dr. Erum Qayum, a proud native of New Orleans, brings a wealth of experience and compassion to her Veterinary Practice. Dr. Q graduated with Honors from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Neurobiology and received her DVM from Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2014.

Dr. Q began her commitment to animal welfare with a pivotal year in shelter medicine at the Houston Humane Society. There, she played a vital role in evaluating and contributing to numerous cruelty cases and investigations, demonstrating her unwavering advocacy for animals in need. She also became an efficient high volume spay-neuter surgeon and honed her surgical skills, performing various soft tissue surgeries during her days at the shelter. Her shelter skills served her well during the crisis of Hurricane Harvey. She volunteered daily at the Houston Convention Center, providing vaccines, dewormer, supplies, food and general care and support for stranded people and their pets. During the freeze of 2021, she worked day and night at a local ER without power to help patients in need and provided shelter at her home for reptiles needing warmth during the electrical outage.

In addition to dogs and cats, Dr. Q has experience in Exotic Animal Medicine and has performed procedures for pigs and chickens on a renowned horse-breeding ranch.

After a few years of private practice, Dr. Q became an Emergency Practitioner and Surgeon in 2019, with the onset of COVID-19. Working in and around the Houston area as an ER doctor, she also took on-call surgeries at all hours of day and night to perform life-saving procedures including C-sections, pyometras, foreign body removal and other abdominal exploratory surgeries.

Dr. Q spent a two-week stint in Goa, India in 2023 to Volunteer her surgical skills at a rescue and mentor British Veterinary students in spay-neuter. She continues to do shelter work once to twice monthly, performing affordable, high volume spay-neuter.

In January of 2024, Dr. Q began a mobile Vaccine Clinic on the weekends to provide affordable preventive options for people of all income levels, and she began work on a Mobile Surgery Trailer, which was completed in Summer of 2024. Her new Q Veterinary Hospital will also offer affordable preventive packages and spay-neuter for qualified clients, an array of surgical services, dentistry and high volume spay-neuter once to twice monthly on Saturdays.

In addition to her Veterinary work, Dr. Q finds joy in her Shih-Tzu friend and certified Emotional Support Animal, Booger. Due to her firsthand experience with the need for population control and shortage of shelter resources and personnel, she’s an advocate of spay-neuter and encourages others to consider adoption and visit shelters when welcoming a new pet into their lives.

Beyond her love for animals, Dr. Q leads an active lifestyle, indulging her passion for athleticism, yoga, music, singing, guitar and travel during her spare time. She avidly promotes a Whole Foods Plant Based diet and advocates for animal rights and conservation of the planet at all levels.

Whether she’s hitting the trails, strumming her guitar, or exploring new destinations, Dr. Q embodies a holistic approach to life that reflects her boundless compassion for all living beings while always keeping alive her zest for fun and adventure!

Growing up, Erika was always drawn to animals. She would bring home hurt birds, snakes and lost dogs. Fast forward to her adult life, where she started her career at a pet resort in 2008 taking care of canines and felines. Only a mere month later, she had a great opportunity to train as a Veterinary assistant at an animal clinic and from there, the rest is history. Erika has excelled in the Veterinary field for the past 15 years as an Emergency/Critical care Technician to Specialty Medicine to General Practice and has worked with an array of different species including horses, exotic animals and even reptiles. Erika takes care of seven reptiles of her own and her rescue pup Percy who is a tri-pod. In her spare time, you can find her doing yoga, going horse back riding, attending festivals and hanging out in the Hill Country at the river!
